Decade of homemade kid costumes

Halloween 22 October 2009 | Comments Off

For years I didn’t consider myself very creative. Sure, I always decorated the house for holidays, did crafty projects with my kids, refinished furniture, loved to try new recipes, and shunned store-bought costumes for what I think are way better homemade creations, but a crafter? Not really.

These days I’m trying to convince myself that I am indeed a crafter. And when you’re surrounded by knitters, crocheters, professional seamstresses, painters, and soft-circuit mavens, you need lots of convincing! I recently went back through photos of the kids in their Halloween costumes that I’ve made, and gosh darn it, I am a crafter (of sorts). Enjoy the photos after the jump!

PS: Two of the costumes shown were store-bought, or mostly purchased at a store and then embellished with homey touches.See if you can spot them. And one of the boys is a former intern, not one of my kids, exactly.

Check Out My Shellacked Decorative Vegetables

interesting tidbits 22 October 2009 | 0 Comments

It must be “bitchy Thursday” around here, but we both loved Collin Nissan’s latest McSweeney’s column, It’s Decorative Gourd Season, Motherfuckers.

Shawn sent me this link and I told her it was good that she could laugh at herself, because this was clearly all about her. I’ll confess to buying this year’s supply of decorative gourds at last week’s farmer’s market, but it was only because I knew she had a deeply rooted need for some fall decor for our table top, and it’s better to feed these kind of things than ignore them.

Tim Gunn is Tired of Your Bullshit

interesting tidbits 22 October 2009 | 0 Comments

I’m not a fan of fashion or reality TV, but I have stumbled upon Project Runway once or twice while channel surfing and gotten at least a momentary kick out of Mr. Gunn’s antics. To my uninformed eye, it sure seems that Tom and Lorenzo at Project Rungay have the show nailed with Tim Gunn is Tired of Your Bullshit.

Can we end Rage Against the Packaging?

Package Wrap Opener

I swear I got teary-eyed when I watched this video. Could such a simple solution really exist? I’m requesting a sample for testing, so stay tuned.

Kindy Rocks the El Mo Daily Bulletin

family 8 October 2009 | 0 Comments

Kindy was happy to get the opportunity to rock out a bit in this Spirit Week video featured on El Molino’s October 6th Daily Bulletin podcast. His friend Andre makes an inspired appearance as well. Tomorrow is the big “Apple Game” out this way and we’ll all be there cheering on the Lions.

Sweet Beatles Rock Band Interstitials

art,interesting tidbits,music 8 October 2009 | 0 Comments

It may seem like it’s one big Rock Band party around here, but really we don’t spend *that* much time in the basement jamming to video games. In what I promise will be my last Rock Band post for awhile (I won’t even get into the upcoming Rock Band for iPhone app or how cool the Iggy Pop and David Bowie LEGO Rock Band characters are), I had to point to these totally cool opening and closing videos and interstitial segments from the Beatles Rock Band title that BoingBoing has nicely posted.

As Brandon Boyer points out, these beautiful bits turn the video game into a virtual interactive documentary. I ooh’ed and ahh’ed over the opening video sequence of The Beatles: Rock Band along with the entire internet when it was released a month or two ago, but I like these interstitial segments created by MK12 just as much. Click through to the BB post and watch them all, as well as the intro and outro video sequences if you haven’t seen them yet. If it doesn’t make you put some Beatles music on the stereo, you’re a stronger man than I.

LEGO Rock Band?!?

interesting tidbits,music 6 October 2009 | 0 Comments

What a week for Rock Band announcements. First we got Flight of the Conchords, pleasing everyone in the household, then today I find out on BookofJoe that there’s going to be a LEGO Rock Band! The 7-year-old definitely approves of this idea, though I remain a bit skeptical and was not particularly enticed by the trailer below. But I’ll still give everyone involved an “A” for effort!

Wooden sunglasses, ah the memories

When Bruce and I first started dating, I was determined to put a little country into the city boy, so I took him fishing and hiking as an introduction. The closest place to fish was a man-made pond in northern Santa Rosa behind a hotel and golf course. It was fun, although we never caught much (if anything). Then disaster struck — as we left the pond at sunset one evening I dropped my Ray-Ban Woodie sunglasses — by far my favorite pair of sunglasses ever. We went back and looked for them in the daylight, but never found them. And when I tried to buy a new pair, Ray-Ban had discontinued them, and there was no way to get a new pair.

Long story short — 22 years after I lost my favorite pair of sunglasses, I can now replace them thanks to Shwood, a Portland-based company that’s making suglasses that not only look like wood, but are wood.

These are going on my Christmas Wish List right now.
